Origin
In 1982, Ortlieb Sportartikel GmbH was founded by Hartmut Ortlieb in Nuremberg, Germany. 15 years later, the company moved to Heilsbronn, located in the district of Ansbach. The first Ortlieb panniers were created out of pure personal need for waterproof bags. At the time, such panniers were not available! The first products were made by hand on Hartmut's mother's sewing machine: dry bags and panniers made from truck canvas. These prototypes were tested by Hartmut and his friends on self-organised cycling and climbing trips. What started out simple quickly developed into a success story.
Today, the company has more than 300 employees and the Ortlieb collection has grown to more than 500 individual products. But even now, everything is under one roof: from development and design to production, sales and marketing. All waterproof products are produced by high-frequency welding technology at the German headquarters in Heilsbronn. ‘Made in Germany’ guarantees high-quality outdoor equipment for all applications, weather conditions and terrains.

Features of Ortlieb
What are the features vab Ortlieb's products? Ortlieb has an extensive range, but even so, its many products share common characteristics. For instance, one of the most striking features of Ortlieb products is their excellent waterproofing. Ortlieb uses welded seams and high-quality waterproof materials, such as PU-coated nylon, to ensure that the bags' contents stay dry, even in extreme weather conditions. In addition, the vast majority of Ortlieb products are designed to last. They are made of robust materials that can withstand wear, tear and harsh conditions. This makes them ideal for intensive use, such as long bike rides or expeditions.
Many Ortlieb bags feature innovative closure systems, such as roller closures, which are not only waterproof but also easy to use. These closures contribute to the overall waterproofing and user-friendliness of the products. Also, many of Ortlieb's products feature reflective details. These provide extra visibility in the dark or in bad weather, which is very nice for cyclists.
Sustainability
Ortlieb is known as a sustainable brand within the outdoor and cycling industry. Where does this lie? We put it in a nutshell:
- Product quality: Ortlieb products, especially the waterproof bags, are designed to last for years. This reduces the need for frequent replacement, which helps reduce waste.
- Repair options: Ortlieb offers many spare parts and a comprehensive repair service for their products. This commitment to repairability helps further extend the lifespan of their products, which is obviously a crucial part of sustainability.
- Material selection: Ortlieb uses high-quality, eco-friendly materials wherever possible. They have also taken steps to reduce the use of PFCs, BPA and PVC. However, the latter material is still used (to a limited extent).
- Production process: Ortlieb manufactures all its products in Germany, under strict environmental rules and labour standards. This ensures a higher level of environmental awareness and reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
- Environmental impact: The company has taken measures to reduce its environmental impact, including energy-efficient production processes and waste reduction.

Made in Germany
As indicated, all Ortlieb products are manufactured in Germany. What exactly does this mean? What are the implications? ‘Made in Germany’ at Ortlieb means that all their products are designed, developed and manufactured entirely in Germany.
Products made in Germany are known for their high quality. Ortlieb values craftsmanship and sustainable product development, meaning their products are robust and long-lasting. In addition, production in Germany is regulated by strict environmental laws. This means Ortlieb must adhere to high standards of environmental protection, such as reducing waste, minimising energy consumption, and using environmentally friendly materials.
Made in Germany further guarantees that the products are manufactured under fair working conditions. German labour laws ensure that workers have good working conditions, fair wages and social security. Ortlieb also reduces its carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances. So it helps them greatly in meeting their overall sustainability goals. Finally, Germany is known for its technical innovation and precision. At Ortlieb, this translates into products that are not only functional and durable, but also feature the latest technologies and materials to meet their customers' needs.
