Lowa

Origin

The Lowa company originated in 1923 in the Bavarian village of Jetzendorf in Germany. Its founder was Lorenz Wagner, a skilled shoemaker who began producing mountain and work boots. The name Lowa is a combination of the first letters of his name: LOrenz WAgners.

Initially, Lowa made handmade shoes for farmers and workers in the region, but over time, the brand's reputation grew because of the shoes' high quality and durability. Especially (mountain) hikers began to appreciate Lowa shoes for their comfort and reliability.

In the decades that followed, Lowa grew into an internationally renowned brand in outdoor footwear. The company still has a strong focus on quality, craftsmanship and innovation, and most production still takes place in Europe, especially in Germany, Italy and Slovakia. Today, Lowa is best known for its hiking, trekking and mountaineering footwear, and is one of the leading brands within the outdoor industry.

Lowa Renegade series

The Renegade has topped the lists of best-selling hiking shoes for men and women for years. The GTX edition of the mid-height version are particularly popular. This A/B hiking shoe is a true all-rounder. Not only suitable for typical Dutch terrains, but also fine for not too technical terrain in the mountains. This makes it attractive to a wide range of users, from recreational hikers to more experienced trekkers.

Many hiking shoes need a long break-in period, but the Lowa Renegade is known for its comfort from day one. The shoe fits snugly, has a soft lining and gives plenty of room to the toes. Thanks to the Gore-Tex lining (on GTX variants), your feet will stay dry even during rainy hikes or when crossing wet terrain. At the same time, the breathable construction keeps your feet from overheating. The shoe also offers solid ankle support without feeling bulky. This makes it ideal for long day hikes, light multi-day treks and uneven terrain. For a mid-height hiking shoe, the Renegade is surprisingly light, reducing fatigue on long walks. At the same time, it remains stable enough for tricky trails or light packs.

The Evo variant

Since 2024, Lowa also has Evo variants of the Renegade. This Evo has new angular lace hooks that should emphasise its modern look. It also features an updated water tab for easier entry and a perfect fit without pressure points. Finally, the upper contains fewer seams, allowing it to conform better to the foot. Reducing seams also reduces potential pressure points.

Sustainability

Lowa takes sustainability extremely seriously and has taken several initiatives in recent years to produce in a more environmentally and socially responsible way. Here are a few examples:

Production in Europe

More than 95% of all Lowa shoes are produced in Europe, mainly in Germany, Italy and Slovakia. This means short transport lines, strict labour standards and better control of environmental standards. Lowa works with long-term partnerships with factories that comply with European environmental legislation.

Sustainable materials

Lowa uses high-quality and sustainable materials, such as leather from certified tanneries (often LWG-certified - Leather Working Group). Efforts are made to ensure the longevity of products to reduce waste. More and more models are free of PFC (fluorine compounds), which can be harmful to the environment.

Of many Lowa models, the sole can be replaced. This promotes longevity of the shoes, which is more sustainable than disposability.

Social responsibility

Lowa is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, an independent organisation that monitors fair working conditions in the textile and footwear industry. This means the brand is committed to safe working conditions, fair wages, no child labour and transparency in the chain.
