How to store and maintain your tent?

Posted on 28-8-2024 by Sem

If you want to enjoy your tent for a long time, proper maintenance is essential. No matter how robust and weatherproof it is. You also need to store your tent in a specific way. With the tips in this blog on cleaning and storing your tent, you can extend its life considerably. So read on soon.

Cleaning your tent

To ensure your tent lasts for years, it is important to maintain it properly. Cleaning the tent poles, pegs and ground pegs goes without saying. You can easily clean these with a damp cloth.

More caution is needed with tent cloth. Before getting started, always read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and warning labels to avoid damaging the canvas. Do not immediately reach for special cleaning products either. These can also damage the waterproof coating on the fabric. Only use such cleaning agents if you will impregnate the tent afterwards. A brush or cloth plus lukewarm water will often be enough to clean most tent fabrics. Finally, it should be noted that cleaning cotton or polycotton tent fabrics is more difficult than cleaning polyester or polyamide tent fabrics.

It is best just to brush down the tent fabric with a soft brush first. This will remove most of the dirt. Tip: do this regularly (including when camping) to prevent dirt build-up. Next, clean the tent with lukewarm water. Try not to scrub too hard, as this can damage the tent fabric. Clean the splash edges and any windows with a sponge and dry cloth used only for this purpose.

The removal of specific stains

Most dirt is easily removed from your tent fabric using the method described above. However, there are some types of stains that require a more elaborate approach. We will briefly go over them.

Tree Resin: with tree resin, the harder the resin, the easier it is to remove. So the trick is to let the resin solidify. You can speed this up with an ice cube. Once the resin has hardened, you can scrape it off with your fingers or a spoon, for example.

Coffee: Coffee stains should be removed as soon as possible. With (plenty of) lukewarm water and a cloth, this should be possible without too much trouble.

Mold (weather): With mould in the tent, prevention really is the best ‘solution’. So store your tent dry! However, you can still do something about mould in the tent, but it is often not possible to remove it completely. Especially with (poly)cotton tents. Special ‘weather strippers’ can often go a long way.

Bird poop: Bird droppings are also best taken off as soon as possible. Scrape or wipe it off the cloth. And clean the remains with a cloth and lukewarm water.

Ventilating the tent well before storing it is highly recommended.

Storage of the tent

When storing your tent, you should keep in mind some simple principles. Store the tent clean and completely dry in a well-ventilated area. Of course, also make sure this area is dry. All this to prevent mould. Also make sure there is no constant sunlight on the stored tent. Prolonged sunlight can reduce the UV-resistance of your tent. So store your tent in a dark place. Then use the storage bag that comes with the tent. Not a random plastic bag. Plastic bags offer insufficient ventilation and may contain chemicals that damage the tent fabric. Finally, pack any groundsheets, splash guards and other accessories separately from the tent fabric to avoid possible damage.

The most important thing is that your tent is really completely dry before you store it. We therefore recommend hanging the tent in a dry environment for a while before actually folding and storing it.
