Origin
Berghaus is a British outdoor clothing and equipment company founded in 1966 by two climbers, Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison. Lockey and Davison were keen mountaineers who were frustrated by the lack of high-quality outdoor equipment available at the time. So they decided to set up their own company and produce high-quality equipment for themselves and their fellow adventurers.
The company grew rapidly and quickly gained a good reputation within the outdoor community. Berghaus became known for its innovative approach to designing outdoor equipment and using advanced materials. They launched several pioneering products, including the Berghaus Cyclops backpack, which gained fame for its durability and functionality.
Over the years, Berghaus has expanded its product line, offering a wide range of outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment for activities such as hiking, climbing, camping and skiing. The company remains a leading player in the outdoor industry and is valued for its continued commitment to innovation and quality.

Technologies and innovations
Hydroshell
Hydroshell is a waterproof and breathable nonporous membrane made of polyurethane and is mainly used in Berghaus' lower-cost rain and hardshell clothing segment. The membrane is mainly incorporated into a laminate with a 2-layer construction. Additionally, a DWR coating is applied to the outer fabric. Besides being breathable and waterproof, Hydroshell is also windproof and offers high wear comfort.
Hydroloft
Hydroloft is a synthetic fill developed by Berghaus itself. It attempts to combine the beneficial properties of down with those of synthetic fabrics. The structure of the polyester fibres is based on the heat retention properties of natural down and contains thousands of tiny cavities. These hold tiny pockets of air and thus help retain your body heat. At the same time, it does not absorb water and therefore remains well insulated no matter what the weather.
Sustainability
Repairhaus
Berghaus wants to make repairs a breeze. The brand's repair service repairs worn and weathered items, increasing an item's lifespan and making replacement slower. Although Repairhaus was launched in 2021, Berghaus has been refurbishing its own products since the 1960s. The company also works with climbing company Dirtbags to upcycle old or unusable products into other products such as climbing storage bags, blankets and slippers.
Made Kinder
In 2016, Berghaus launched the Made Kinder label and has continued to develop it over the years. This initiative encourages the company to make its products more from lower-impact materials. To ensure Berghaus keeps pace with ever-evolving sustainability standards over time, the company made the criteria more stringent in 2022. As a result, the number of products with the Made Kinder label decreased once. Products with the Made Kinder label must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- it consists of more than 75% recycled material or 50% bio-based material.
- it consists of more than 90% Bluesign-certified material.
- is made of organic cotton.
- it contains RDS certified down.
- in the case of waterproof/breathable clothing, the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) should be PFC-free.
