Origin

On, also known as On Running, originated in Switzerland in the year 2010. It was founded by three people: Olivier Bernhard, a former professional triathlete, and his friends David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti.

Olivier Bernhard was looking for a shoe that could improve his performance while being comfortable for running. He began experimenting with custom soles, attaching pieces of rubber garden hoses under his running shoes to improve cushioning. That innovation led to a unique idea of a sole that both lands softly and sets off powerfully. Together with Allemann and Coppetti, he developed an entirely new type of running shoe with what later became known as CloudTec® technology - a sole with individual pods (clouds) that combine cushioning and explosiveness.

In July 2010, the first On shoes entered the market and were immediately received positively by both recreational runners and athletes. The brand grew rapidly, thanks in part to its striking technology, minimalist design and strong focus on innovation. In the following years, On expanded internationally and gained a strong following, especially in the United States, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands.

Technologies and innovations

On differs from other footwear brands in several ways, mainly through their technology, design philosophy and brand identity. We discuss some of the technologies here:

CloudTec

The CloudTec sole is On's core technology, typifying almost every model. The sole consists of individual pods or "clouds" that compress on landing for soft cushioning. On push-off, they block together for a firm and powerful repulsion. This makes running feel light and dynamic, like walking on clouds, which is also the brand's slogan: "Run on Clouds."

Helion Superfoam

Helion Superfoam is a special foam material developed by Swiss sports brand On. It is one of their key innovations in cushioning and energy return in running shoes. You'll find Helion in many popular models from On, such as:

• Cloudstratus: for long distances and maximum cushioning
• Cloudmonster: for maximum energy return and comfort

Speedboard

Speedboard is a flexible plate that sits in the midsole. It converts landing energy into forward power. It works with the CloudTec sole to support a faster, more energetic push-off. Each Speedboard is tailored to the shoe's purpose (e.g. for long distances, speed or trails).

Missiongrip

A grip technology that you see mostly in trailrunning and hiking shoes from On. It provides extra traction on uneven terrain. It also combines different grip patterns and rubber types for more stability and control.

Sustainability

In recent years, On has been increasingly active in the field of sustainability and aims to stand out as an innovative and environmentally aware sports brand. Their approach is both technologically innovative and forward-looking. Below are some examples of what On is doing in the field of sustainability:

CleanCloud

One of On's most pioneering projects is CleanCloud. This is a revolutionary technology that converts carbon gas emissions (such as CO2 from industrial sources) into EVA foam, the base material for shoe soles. This aims to convert emissions into a usable, sustainable product. Thus, waste gas becomes a raw material for sports products.

Cyclon programme

In 2021, On launched the Cyclon, a running shoe made of 100% biodegradable and recyclable materials. However, customers do not buy this Cyclon shoe, but subscribe to it. Then, when the shoe wears out, you send it back and get a new pair. The old shoes are then completely recycled.

Recycled materials

On is increasingly integrating recycled materials into their products. For instance, recycled polyester is increasingly used in the uppers of shoes. Bio-based materials such as sugar cane are also used in certain parts of soles. On continues to aim to drastically reduce the environmental impact of their production. A great example of this is that shipping boxes and packaging materials today are often made of recycled paper/cardboard.
